Sakkarakottai Bird Sanctuary is located in Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu, covering about 230.5 ha, and was declared a bird sanctuary in 2012. Centered around the Sakkarakottai Tank, it supports over 120 species of resident and migratory waterbirds such as pelicans, ibises, herons, and darters. It is also a Ramsar Site (2024) and serves as an important breeding and wintering wetland.
Oussudu Lake Bird Sanctuary is located in Puducherry and partly in Tamil Nadu, covering about 331.7 ha, and was declared a bird sanctuary in 2015. The freshwater wetland supports numerous resident and migratory waterbirds such as herons, storks, pelicans, and ducks. It is also a Ramsar Site (2022) and serves as an important wintering ground and ecological hotspot in the region.
